Anesthesia & Analgesia seeks a balance between definitive clinical and management investigations and outstanding basic scientific reports. The Journal welcomes original manuscripts containing rigorous design and analysis, even if unusual in their approach. Recommended reading: 1 2.
The components of an Original Research Report manuscript should include (see details below):
- Title Page
- Structured Abstract with no more than 400 words.
- “Key Points” summary (only for manuscript revisions; not necessary for initial submission): describing the Research Question, Findings, and Meaning, each composed of one sentence.
- An Original Research Report can have no more than 12 listed authors. Other persons may be listed as collaborators in an online supplement: see authorship criteria below.
- The Introduction section should be focused and contain no more than 400 words. The Introduction succinctly describes, in a series of short paragraphs, the significance of the topic, pertinent background, rationale for the study, a priori study aims or objectives, and primary study hypothesis, and if appropriate, secondary study hypothesis.
- Methods
- Results
- The Discussion section should also be focused and contain no more than 1000 words. A useful structure for the Discussion, which could form subheadings if desired: (a) summary of main findings in the context of the hypothesis presented in the Introduction (this is not a repeat of the results, but a sentence or two that relates the main findings to the research question); (b) comparison with other work (e.g., how the results are similar to or different from previous results); (c) limitations of the study and/or how any challenges were addressed or overcome; (d) clinical and/or scientific implications; (e) suggestions for further work, which should avoid general phrases like “more studies are needed."
- An Original Research Report contains up to 4000 words (not counting the Abstract and references)
- References should be used sparingly. While recognition of previous work is understandable, and the main points in the argument should be supported with references, use of multiple references to justify a single point is discouraged. It is expected that the manuscript will not have more than 40 references, and more than this number will require explanation in the cover letter and/or justification during the review process. Authors should be prepared to reduce the reference count on editorial direction in any revision.
- An Original Report contains up to 6 tables and/or figures. Online supplemental material can be provided when appropriate.
