Diagnosis

  • SIRS, severe sepsis, and septic shock are outdated concepts from the 1990s.
  • Most recent guidelines from 2016 Surviving Sepsis
    • Life threatening organ dysfunction due to systemic infection
    • qSOFA or SOFA score are screening tools for organ dysfunction, NOT for sepsis
    • Shock: Persistent hypotension, not responsive to fluids, requiring pressors to keep MAP > 65, and lactate > 2
